Social Inclusion and Recreational Program
Statistics suggest that many adults with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus live on
limited incomes, with a heavy or sole reliance on the Disability Pension. This situation,
coupled with circumstances such as limited mobility and cognitive problems (eg poor
memory) for our members can lead to social isolation. In recognition of these issues,
SBHA has devised a structured program of Social Inclusion activities that provide
a diverse range of opportunities for our members and encourage them to participate
in a variety of social and recreational events that help to combat isolation.
The range of activities and events is constantly expanding from year to year. A
particular focus has been in the area of healthy living and lifestyle events such
as; healthy cooking classes, exercise programs (conducted by qualified professionals)
and other similar activities, however there are also a number of events tailored
around simply recreational type activities, like; ten-pin bowling, karaoke nights,
movie & pizza nights, wheelchair dancing and many more.
For the more adventurous, we have also catered for many outdoor activities such
as; sailing, gliding, pistol shooting, fishing, camps, zoo trips, and others. At
SBHA we are committed to providing the broadest range of opportunities and experiences
to our members that they may not have otherwise had the chance to experience. The
program has been highly successful in helping to increase self esteem and confidence
for our members, and helps to promote life long friendships and networks. Our Social
Inclusion program is an important aspect of our goal to improve the quality of life
for all people with Spina Bifida &/or Hydrocephalus.
