Subsidies Information

The Association part-subsidises many medical and support services specifically required by people with Spina Bifida or Hydrocephalus.

The items that attract a subsidy (up to specified limits) include:

  • Continence aids such as absorbent pads, protective pants, catheters and catheterisation requirements
  • Basic costs of membership to Medic Alert
  • Membership to Ileostomy/Colostomy and Diabetes Associations and other allied services
  • Repairs and purchase of callipers, boots, and sticks
  • The difference between Medicare/Health fund refund and scheduled fees (ie gap) related to Spina Bifida or Hydrocephalus associated medical assistance
  • Pharmaceutical prescribed items relating to Spina Bifida or Hydrocephalus
  • Costs relating to personal alarms
  • Maintenance costs for mobility aids (ie wheelchairs etc) not covered by other agencies
  • Membership for SA Ambulance
  • Access cab costs to attend in-house SBHA events
  • The purchase of manual wheelchairs or powered transport aids
  • Window/house cleaning expenses for those living independently - outside of government provided services
  • House relocation costs
  • Wellness and self-improvement educational course costs
  • Certain non-PBS medications
  • Motor vehicle driving lessons and assesments
  • Fitting hand controls to a registered motor vehicle

Subsidy Scheme Information

To receive a subsidy, the claim MUST be for the benefit of a current financial member of the Association. Also, the claim must relate to Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. If a subsidy is requested and membership has not been paid the right is reserved to deduct membership from the subsidy payment. Subsidies range from 25% to 50%, depending on the respective item involved, and maximum dollar limits per category of items also apply in some cases.The scope and limits of the system are reviewed annually.
